The use of a respirator is essential if you work in an environment where you're exposed to respiratory hazards.
A respirator fit testing is required for college students in programs such as nursing, PSW, and welding, who need to have a record of fit testing for their placements.

CSA standards indicate that candidates must be clean shaven within 16 hours in order to be fit-tested.
Also remove any facial jewelry or other items that come between the skin and respirator.
Refrain from eating, drinking (except for plain water), smoking, or chewing gum for at least 15 minutes prior to the test.
You can purchase a respirator during your fit testing session, or we can offer options that meet your specific needs and protection requirements.

Our Qualitative Respirator Fit Testing complies with the CSA Standard Z94.4-18 for fit testing, as well as the guidelines for selection, use, and care of respirators (Z94.4-02). It includes a mandatory instructional component, the duration of which varies based on the type of respirator.
Book a Fit TestingA fit test is used to determine which respirator properly conforms to your face, ensuring a seal that minimizes exposure to contaminant leakage through the faceplate. This process involves the use of a testing agent, which can be detected either through the wearer’s sense of smell or an involuntary cough reaction to irritant smoke, or measured with specialized equipment to confirm the mask’s fit.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that individuals using a tight-fitting respirator in the workplace undergo and pass a fit test before use.
If there are gaps around the edges of the mask, unfiltered air can bypass the mask and enter your lungs. To prevent this, always check that your mask is positioned correctly and sealed properly each time you wear it. Keep in mind that facial hair, including beards and stubble, can prevent a secure seal from forming. If you are unsure if your current mask fits properly, it is best to get a fit test.
A fit test is required before wearing a tight-fitting respirator, such as an N95, for the first time. After that, testing must be repeated at least annually or sooner if you experience significant changes in weight or facial structure. If you change jobs or switch to a different respirator model, a new fit test is also required.
Schedule a respirator fit test at one of our branches or at your workplace. Book here, and a Sales Representative will reach out to you promptly.
To ensure accurate results, avoid eating, drinking (except water), smoking, or chewing gum for at least 15 minutes before your test. Additionally, you must be clean-shaven in the areas where the mask seals to your face to achieve a proper fit. Take off jewelry that can get in the way of the mask seal.
If you already have a mask or your employerhas provided one, you must bring it for testing. If you need a mask, Levac Safety has a variety of options available for purchase to ensure your mask is optimized for safety and comfort
No. Your fit test is only valid for the exact brand, model, and size of respirator that you were tested with. Since different manufacturers design their masks differently, a fit test does not guarantee a proper seal with other respirators. Levac Safety mask fit testers will help youfind the perfect mask that optimizes safety and comfort.
Since you were fit-tested with a specific mask, you cannot use any other model because you are not certain it provides the same fit and protection required.
It is entirely possible that an instant failure can occur at any time due to a variety of reasons which would end the test prematurely. There are a number of reasons you could fail the test: The respiratory mask being tested doesn't provide an adequate seal around your face, incorrect size, model or style provided. In the case of a failed fit test, you will need to try a different model/style of respirator until one successfully fits.
The fit testing process typically takes between 15 and 20 minutes.
Yes, you can generally undergo a mask fittest if you are pregnant, as the solutions used in the testing process are generally considered safe. However, you should closely monitor the fit of your mask during and after pregnancy to ensure no significant changes to face shape has occurred.
Fit testing is mandatory for tight-fitting respirators, including filtering facepiece respirators (like N95 masks), half-face respirators, full-face respirators, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Levac Safety has a wide selection of masks available,to customize fit and comfort.
No, in Ontario, you cannot conduct your own mask fit test; it must be performed by a qualified, trained professional, as per regulatory requirements. Levac Safety offers mask fit testing at job locations or at our Brockville and Kingston locations.
In Ontario, respirator maskfit tests can be performed by competent individuals who are appropriately trained, qualified, and experienced in conducting such tests, often including occupational health and safety personnel, certified fit testing administrators, and safety officers/managers. In addition to providing mask fit testing, Levac Safety also has courses to “Train The Trainer” so you can learn how to provide mask fit testing, and train others how to do so.
